BACKGROUND
I am a Visiting Consultant Anaesthetist with academic records with interests in regional, ophthalmic, elderly and colorectal anaesthesia based at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Singapore since 14th March 2022.
Earlier I worked as full time Senior Cnsultant in Anaesthesia between 14th March 2011 to 13th Mrch 2022. I am also a Visiting Professor, Newcastle University Medical School, Educity, Iskender Puteri, Malaysia since December 2016.
Previously worked as Consultant Anaesthetist in The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, UK, since 1987. I was an Honorary Professor of Anaesthesia, School of Health, University of Teesside, Middlesbrough, UK (2004-2014).
I have proven track records in teaching, training, examining, providing and establishing anaesthetic services (Acute Pain Service and Ophthalmic Regional Anaesthesia Service 1991).
I was involved in teaching of medical students from Dundee, Newcastle University (Clinical Lecturer) and later Stockton campus of Durham University (Clinical Lecturer) and currently Newcastle Medical School, Malaysia.
I founded the British Ophthalmic Anaesthesia Society (BOAS) in 1998, served as its secretary for 6 years and later as President until June 2011.
I founded and organized the 1st World Congress of Ophthalmic Anaesthesia in London, April 2004.
I was Scientific Chairman of the 2nd World Congress of Ophthalmic Anaesthesia (Cairo 2008), International President, 3rd World Congress of Ophthalmic Anaesthesia (Turkey 2012), Scientific Chairman for the 4th World Congress to be held in September 2016, Chennai, India and now scientific co-ordinator for the forthcoming 5th World Congress of Ophthalmic Anaesthesia.
I was the founder secretary and later served as President of the Society for Education in Anaesthesia (UK).
I was an elected Council Member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAAGBI 2005 - 2009) and served as Chairman of the Events Committee and Chairman of the International Relations Committee. I was appointed as Bernard Johnson Advisor for the Overseas Doctors Training Scheme of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (2005 - 2008).
I was an elected council member of The Royal College of Anaesthetists (2007-2014), London and Chaired Physician Assistant (Anaesthesia) Committee and the Education Committee but moved to Singapore after half term.
I was the Scientific Chairman (Workshops) and also Chairman, Finance Committee of 3rd World Congress of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy, February 2013 (Sydney, Australia). I was the Scientific Chairman of 4th World Congress of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy, 24-28th November 2014 (Cape Town, South Africa).
I served as examiner for Primary FFARCS (College of Anaesthetists, Dublin until 2001), Examiner for Final FFARCS (College of Anaesthetists, Dublin until 2018), and I was an examiner for Final Examination European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia (Brussels) until 2018. I have been an examiner for MD Surgery (Newcastle University), MSc Anaesthesia (Cardiff University) and M Med Anaesthesia (University of Malaya) and PhD examiner for All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, India.
I conducted live demonstrations of orbital blocks since 1995 until 2010. I have lectured and conducted master classes on topics related to ophthalmic anaesthesia and regional anaesthesia and Pain Therapy in all the continents which includes many prestigious organisations Ophthalmic Anesthesia Society (USA 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO 2005, 2006), American Society of Anesthesilogists (ASA 2005, 2013, 2015), World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (Paris 2004, Cape Town 2008, Argentina 2012, Hong Kong 2016, Prague 2020), World Congress of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy (Barcelona 2002, Rio 2006, Sydney 2012, Cape Town 2014), European Society of Anaesthesiology (Lisbon 2004, Madrid 2005, Vienna 2006), European Society of Regional Anaesthesia (2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016 ), Ophthalmic Anaesthesia Course (Singapore 2004, 2008), Indonesia Regional Anaesthesia Congress (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016), Bali Ophthalmology Retreat (2010), The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (2010), Royal College of Anaesthetists (since 2008), Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthesiologists (2014, 2015, 2016), Sydney Eye Hospital Course (2014), OFISA India (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015). I edited 10 textbooks in various subspecialty of anaesthesia.
I have published more than 200 peer review articles in various journals and contributed 12 chapters for other books.
I am a recipient of the highest award (Platinum 2010) bestowed by the Advisory Committee of Clinical Excellence Award, Department of Health to a practicing UK consultant in the National Health Service.
I was selected as one of Top Britain Doctor under anaesthesia category (published the National Newspapers, Times Magazine, UK, November, 2010).
I was honpored with the life time achievement award by the Brirish Ophthalmic Anaesthesia Society in 2010. Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Singapore (2011-2022)
I established the Audit Steering Committee in Anaesthesia. The committee has now changed its name to Audit and Research Committee Anaesthesia. As chairman, I was responsible for steering and helping with clinical audit in the department.
With the help of Prof Kwong Fah Koh and Prof Edwin Seet, I have established a nurse led Topical Anaesthesia list for cataract surgery in February 2013.
Also introduced no fasting, no or minimum investigations and street clothes to all patients undergoing cataract surgery since October 2016.
I continue to teach medical officers & residents, research, run eye anaesthesia workshops around the world and participate as speakers in prestigious conferences/congresses of the world after fulfilling my clinical commitments.
